Narrative:
Shortly after opening the position; (splitting it off from sdmr); an aircraft reported IFR off rnm. I wasn't expecting that; especially since there was a jet head on; opposite direction on a visual approach to rnm. As soon as the aircraft tagged up; I pointed out the traffic and established visual separation; then vectored him out of the way of the jet. I alerted the supervisor to the possibility of loss of separation. The supervisor investigated and told me he thinks rnm tower provided visual separation. I don't know when that separation occurred; whether before or after the loss of separation. Recommendation; if the person who gave me the picture as I opened the position had told me about the rnm departure about to happen; I would have been able to ensure separation was maintained.
