Narrative:
Air carrier xxax was over pvd @ 11000. Air carrier xxbx checked on frequency descending through FL210 to cross pvd @ 11000. Air carrier xxax then checked on frequency level @ 11000 over pvd. Air carrier xxbx had taken the frequency change for his company air carrier xxax. This situation was quickly corrected by myself and the ZBW sector controller because similar occurrence of this situation occurred the previous evening between the same two flights. Recommendation; four digit flight numbers appear to be causing many problems. Airlines should not be allowed to schedule two flights with almost identical flight numbers within their own system on similar routing's. Airlines should not be allowed to schedule similar flight numbers as other airlines to and from the same airports.
