Narrative:

After departing we were about 20 minutes into the flight climbing through approximately FL280 when there was a loud bang followed by fluctuating indications on the number 2 engine instruments. The captain retarded the number 2 thrust lever. An engine 2 stall ECAM came up and the captain called for the engine surge/ stall qrc. While running the qrc a eng 2 egt ovr limit ECAM came up. Soon afterward the egt came back to normal parameters and the engine continued to run at normal idle thrust. Because of the over temperature we elected to return to the departure airport which was only 80 miles behind us. We declared an emergency; contacted dispatch; talked to the flight attendants and passengers then returned for an uneventful landing. After landing we shut down the number 2 engine and asked the fire department to do a visual inspection of the area. They said it appeared normal so we taxied to the gate and deplaned the passengers.
