Narrative:
Departing oak we were assigned the skyline SID. Prior to taxi we discussed the altitude restrictions associated with the SID with special emphasis on the 'cross at or above' notations. These restrictions included 'cross 4 NM from oak at or below 2;000 ft'; 'cross porte at or above 9;000 ft'; and 'cross pesca at or above 13;000 ft'. (Capitalizing of 'above' and 'below' is my addition.) taking the runway for takeoff we were reminded by ATC to comply with the 4 NM restriction at which point we both said; 'at or above' to each other. After takeoff at approximately 2;500 ft ATC notified us we were to cross at or below 2;000 ft. The controller told us 'not to worry about it' but just remember it next time. At which point the controller issued a heading to fly. The 'below' restriction needs to be separated better from the 'above' restrictions. On the SID the 4 NM restriction has been underlined; which seems to indicate this restriction has caused problems before. But in my opinion a better way to differentiate the restriction would to also capitalize the 'below' portion textually. Also since the tower controller mentions the restriction anyway as you are taking the runway perhaps the controller could also verbally use the word 'below' in this transmission. As far as the crew we should have spent more time reviewing the SID and discussing this procedure better. This is a fairly complex SID.
