Narrative:
After takeoff I noticed amber X's on the pfd (indicating a loss of normal law protections) just as I said... 'It looks like...' then bing we got an ECAM; protections lost altitude law. I announced the ECAM; captain said he had aircraft and radios; I did the ECAM; cleared screens notified dispatch/maintenance via voice. Told ATC we were diverting but upon checking weather decided returning was better option. Returned to field after burning off fuel and running numerous checklist and over weight landing. Captain did a great job of notifying flight attendants and had a smooth touch down.
