Narrative:

Aircraft was pushed straight back westward from the gate. We started the number one engine and accomplished the before taxi checklist after the tug disconnected. The clearance from ground control for taxi included an option to taxi along;'K or E2; then echo to runway 10L.' we read back clearance and referenced the airport diagram. I elected to join at E2. The tug had spotted the aircraft slightly to the east of and perpendicular to taxiway E2. After receiving clearance I added power and began a tight 90 degree turn to align the aircraft towards E2. Unknowing to us a regional jet was taxing behind us and most likely received a similar clearance to join E2 while we were either at the gate or pushing off the gate. The first officer spotted the taxiing regional jet and commanded emergency stop. We stopped and estimated that our right wing was within 25 feet of the regional jet. The regional jet continued at his consistent taxi speed to E2; then east to runway 10L. Ground control made no remarks regarding a rapidly approaching regional jet behind and to our right. The push back gave us no view of any aircraft. We applied maximum brakes. The a flight attendant reported that her right arm impacted the galley bulkhead while she was giving her demo brief. No passengers identified themselves with any related injuries. She stated that although she was able to resume duties she did feel discomfort to her shoulder and wrist. The ramp area is very narrow. I do not recommend using this area if a valid taxiway is available like E1 or E2. Had I pulled forward at a 45 degree angle and taxied forward towards kilo taxiway the first officer would not have been able to see beyond the right wing and would have most likely resulted in a ground mishap with the regional jet.
