Narrative:
We leveled off and before the cruise checklist was initiated; I felt a very slight airframe vibration. This was followed by an aural warning autopilot disconnect. I noticed the annunciated of 'over speed' on the primary engine instrument panel and that the airspeed warning indicator and airspeed indicator were matched. I then retarded the throttle. The over speed warning and slight vibration went away. The autopilot was then reconnected. The autothrottles were inoperative on this flight. Failure to reduce throttles at level off and or failure to run the checklist immediately; caused the problem. The appropriate maintenance entry was made in the logbook.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757 crew flying an aircraft with MEL'ed Autothrottles; accelerated to an overspeed situation upon reaching their cruise altitude because they were distracted by chart reading for route verification.
