Narrative:

I was working the monitor 2 position which does not have a foot pedal. I had noticed that my button used to transmit had been working only some of the time. I then asked an flm (front line manager) for another headset. He brought me one and I hurried to plug into the new headset. The new headset was brand new and wrapped up so I had to unwrap it. During that time I periodically looked back at my scope to make sure all is well. When I finally got plugged in to the new headset I looked up and I had already lost 3 NM separation with 2 aircraft. During this busy IFR session the high speed turnoffs could not be seen by the local so 3 NM was required. If the high speeds could have been seen then standard separation would have been 2.5 miles. Recommendation; I should not have tried to unwrap the new headset; I should have had someone else do it then hand it to me ready to go.
