Narrative:
Opening fuselage panel 196FR for lubing right-hand overwing (O/west) escape slide system. Found overwing slide pack bulging and will not swing out of compartment easily. Informed my lead of problem and ordered new slide pack. Upon further inspection of pack; found cover around outside [of slide pack] shredded and torn. Pack most likely would not have deployed in an emergency. Too swollen inside compartment. Overhaul date was two and a half years ago.
