Narrative:

While in cruise flight I experienced a near miss with another aircraft on a southeasterly heading. Successful evasive action was taken. At the time I was using the VFR advisory service. No warning of converging traffic was provided. Upon questioning ATC personnel; the explanation for a lack of warning was not credible. ATC acknowledged that the other aircraft had an operational transponder with mode C reporting 200' below my altitude.
