A B737-700 captain reported that the dsply source alerted at cruise. The QRH did not correct the problem and on short final the first officer's flight director failed.

Narrative:
While cruising at FL400 about 1 hour from landing; the first officer's navigation screened blinked off then on. We then noticed an amber dsply source illuminated on both pfds at the bottom left corner. We ran the dsply source QRH which did not fix the problem. I notified ATC that we possibly lost a backup computer that provides navigational and flight control information. I then notified dispatch through ACARS and requested maintenance at our destination. The first officer was the flying pilot. On a 10 mile final; the first officer lost his flight director display. He then transferred the controls to me as the flying pilot since I had a full display of information. Landing was normal. The QRH was of little help for this event. A more thorough checklist for troubleshooting would be nice.
