Narrative:
Flew filed departure versus cleared departure. For various reasons I did not visually verify the pre departure clearance on the FMC. I confirmed the departure/route verbally with the first officer(first officer). Thinking at a dawn departure we may get the quiet 2 departure to lin (filed for SFO8) I asked the first officer; 'so did we get the quiet 2?' he responded; 'nope; the SFO8.' as we rolled down the runway; I noticed the aircraft preceding us was turning left to the north (the flight path of the quiet 2); so when I checked in I stated that we were airborne; climbing to 15;000' on a heading of 030 (the SF08 heading). I thought that if we were on the wrong departure; they would key; 'confirm the quiet 2; or roger; fly the quiet 2 departure.' after we passed the turn point on the quiet 2; departure did come up and asked us to confirm we were flying the quiet 2. I looked at the first officer and he confidently stated; 'nope; we're cleared for the SFO8.' I asked departure to standby while I looked at the pre departure clearance. As luck would have it; the departure was changed to the quiet 2; and as usual; the field departure was also displayed. I fessed up to our error. Departure gave us a left turn for about 2 miles then cleared us back to a heading; direct lin. The controller assured us that there was absolutely no problem; don't worry about it; no harm; no foul; it is for noise abatement only; etc. As I stated above; I failed to do that for various reasons; not the least of which I was unable to find any of the departures I needed due to my unfamiliarity with the 'ship set' charts. While looking for the SID I simply asked the first officer instead of checking the pre departure clearance myself. He stated that he saw what he was looking for (the SFO8) and didn't get past that. That leads me to a suggestion/question. Why does the pre departure clearance show our filed route; with corrections that can be confusing? I know what my filed route is; from the release. I only care about our cleared routing. Can the software be changed to only display the cleared routing? I don't care what the filed route is. This is not the first time I have seen this cause confusion. When we received the clearance over the radio it was; 'cleared to destination via the QUIET2; lin; as filed.' seems like a worthwhile software change for the air crews.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 flight crew departed on the SFO 8 departure instead of the cleared Quiet 2; due to miss reading the revised segment of the PDC. Unfamiliarity with the onboard charts led to distractions and miscues by both pilots.
