Narrative:

On 6/fri/88, at approximately XA40 hours at pdk airport, I contacted ground control and received an IFR clearance to lexington, ky, and was directed to runway 2L. As I neared the midsection of runway 2L and the taxiway, I observed a large light transport jet approaching from my left and a little behind my aircraft. Ground control directed the jet to yield to my plane and pass behind me. I was momentarily distracted by this aircraft and I wanted to be sure that it was not overtaking me. During this distraction I failed to turn 90 degrees to my right and taxied onto the active runway (2L). I realized immediately what I had done, looked down the runway and noted a high wing aircraft that had already taken off on runway 2L which appeared to be several hundred ft in the air and climbing. The quickest thing to do was taxi straight ahead and clear the active. The ground controller directed me to turn around, cross the runway and then proceed to the departure end of runway 2L. The remainder of the flight was uneventful. I obtained this form from the FAA tower supervisor in lexington, ky. This incident occurred primarily because I was inattentive while taxiing to runway 2L. I was distracted by the approaching jet aircraft at the same time I should have turned down the taxiway. One suggestion that might help avoid this is to better identify the taxiway along runway 2L. As you leave the terminal area, the entire area is pavement and there is no clearly defined marker as to taxiway to runway 2L. At midfield the pavement, taxiway and runway all seem to be continuous.

Title: CROSSED ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative: ON 6/FRI/88, AT APPROX XA40 HRS AT PDK ARPT, I CONTACTED GND CTL AND RECEIVED AN IFR CLRNC TO LEXINGTON, KY, AND WAS DIRECTED TO RWY 2L. AS I NEARED THE MIDSECTION OF RWY 2L AND THE TXWY, I OBSERVED A LARGE LTT JET APCHING FROM MY LEFT AND A LITTLE BEHIND MY ACFT. GND CTL DIRECTED THE JET TO YIELD TO MY PLANE AND PASS BEHIND ME. I WAS MOMENTARILY DISTRACTED BY THIS ACFT AND I WANTED TO BE SURE THAT IT WAS NOT OVERTAKING ME. DURING THIS DISTR I FAILED TO TURN 90 DEGS TO MY RIGHT AND TAXIED ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY (2L). I REALIZED IMMEDIATELY WHAT I HAD DONE, LOOKED DOWN THE RWY AND NOTED A HIGH WING ACFT THAT HAD ALREADY TAKEN OFF ON RWY 2L WHICH APPEARED TO BE SEVERAL HUNDRED FT IN THE AIR AND CLBING. THE QUICKEST THING TO DO WAS TAXI STRAIGHT AHEAD AND CLEAR THE ACTIVE. THE GND CTLR DIRECTED ME TO TURN AROUND, CROSS THE RWY AND THEN PROCEED TO THE DEP END OF RWY 2L. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. I OBTAINED THIS FORM FROM THE FAA TWR SUPVR IN LEXINGTON, KY. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED PRIMARILY BECAUSE I WAS INATTENTIVE WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 2L. I WAS DISTRACTED BY THE APCHING JET ACFT AT THE SAME TIME I SHOULD HAVE TURNED DOWN THE TXWY. ONE SUGGESTION THAT MIGHT HELP AVOID THIS IS TO BETTER IDENT THE TXWY ALONG RWY 2L. AS YOU LEAVE THE TERMINAL AREA, THE ENTIRE AREA IS PAVEMENT AND THERE IS NO CLEARLY DEFINED MARKER AS TO TXWY TO RWY 2L. AT MIDFIELD THE PAVEMENT, TXWY AND RWY ALL SEEM TO BE CONTINUOUS.
