Narrative:
I was the PF and just started to accelerate at about 10800'. At approximately 12000' the captain saw on his side of the airplane another twin which he said was taking evasive action to miss us. We reported the occurrence to ATC and they said there was an light transport in our vicinity which had broke his altitude. Supplemental information from acn 88802: I asked for a phone number to call the controller in ord. I called at xapm but the controller had gone home for the evening. He left his home phone number, but I elected not to call him at home. At time of the encounter I had assigned both myself and the second officer traffic watch. All of our lights were on per company SOP. I feel that these lights, required to be on until reaching 18000', helped to prevent a major accident as did the new company SOP of assigning a formal traffic watch. Supplemental information from acn 88802: later chicago center supervisor indicated possible controller error and the other aircraft was an light transport. Estimated closest sep was 1200'.
