Narrative:

We were told to taxi to runway 12 in mia. We had planned on a 8L departure. After clearance was received from ground we re briefed a 12 via P taxi. When we were both clear of the instructions. We started our taxi on taxiway P. The captain stated he had taxi under control down P to 12. I then diverted my attention to the aircraft to changed the box to match 12 not 8L. I was heads down the captain drove aircraft onto runway 12 intersection south. Before I realized the situation; it was too late. We crossed onto an active runway. The captain stated a lack of proper signs in that area led to the mistake. I have been to that area of the airport and no one has ever made the mistake to veer off taxiway P. That is why I was changing the box early to be more heads up later in the taxi. Better signs in that area and never losing track of your position are the best solutions to this event.
