Narrative:

I was holding short of the runway. I had an IFR flight plan filed and was coordinating with approach for my clearance on the clearance delivery frequency. The controller told me that there was an aircraft (I believe a piper archer) on the VOR approach from the southwest and to let her know when he commenced his circle to land and she would release me. Just as the archer commenced his circle to land maneuver; a cessna 152 was landing when approach offered me a release. I told her that I was number 2 waiting for the cessna to clear the runway. The archer made a call on unicom that he had turned downwind for the runway. When the 152 cleared the active I noticed that the archer was still headed downwind so I let gray approach know that I could now depart. The controller released me. I took another look at the archer and final and began to taxi to the runway. Before I keyed my mike to make my unicom call; the archer made a call that he was turning base for the runway. At this point I was already moving into the runway and my tail was toward the archer; I made my call that I was taking off on the runway with a southeast departure. The archer made another call in the radio stating that he was on base for the runway and sounded as though I had gotten in his way. I was well into my takeoff roll by now and knew that I would be off the runway in plenty of time for him to land well behind me. I stated something to that effect on the unicom and he replied with a; 'negative! I'm going around!' again I emphasized that I would be well clear for him to land. Just as I was raising my gear; he asked me to state my speed. At that time I was accelerating through 100 mph IAS. Then; when I was about 300-400 ft AGL prior to making my eastbound turn in order to ensure that he was clear of me; I asked him if he was on the roll out. About that time I could hear approach calling him and then me. He answered me on the unicom that he had done a go-around and was right behind me. I immediately level off as I didn't know if he was above me; below me or how far behind me. Approach told me that he was close behind me and I needed to turn east. I was concerned because I still couldn't see him. As I turned I did see him probably less than a mile behind me approximately at my 7 o'clock and close to the same altitude. I then realized that he had never intended to land; and that he didn't go-around because of me; but had planned to execute a 'missed approach' or a 'low approach.' unfortunately I never heard him state those intentions on unicom. When he said he was downwind and then base for the runway; I assumed full stop. I will concede that I was; by this time somewhat eager to get on the road so to speak and may have missed it if he did say that he was doing a low approach. I don't think so but anything is possible. In any case; this incident illustrates the need to both positively state your intentions at an uncontrolled airport as well as the importance of not getting in a hurry to takeoff. Also; if you find yourself behind someone in such a situation; please turn away! When I realized that he was right behind me without knowing where; it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end! Approach made a comment about how close we were and referenced a movie called 'snow dogs.' I apologized to both the archer and approach control for my part in the incident and continued on my way; but couldn't quite get the uneasy feeling out of my mind.

Title: A Pilot reported departing a CTAF airport VFR with traffic on final which he assumed to be a full stop. The landing aircraft was actually a low approach and a conflict developed when both aircraft began flying the same track.
