Narrative:
On climb out passing through FL295 we got about 4 loud bangs. I retarded the throttles and leveled at FL310. Checked our engine instruments and nothing was out of limits. We acknowledged that they were compressor stalls and decided not to continue over water. The captain contacted the technician while I advised ARTCC that we were declaring an emergency and were looking to return to the coast. Between the dispatcher and technician; ZZZ was selected for our diversion airport. Once we began the descent the compressor stalls began again. I verified it was the right engine; once the throttles were at idle it stopped. We completed the engine checklist and the overweight landing checklist and landed safely at ZZZ.
