Narrative:
On takeoff; engine number one red egt light illuminated. [We] accomplished engine limit QRH checklist. During the climb to altitude; [we] contacted maintenance and operations with the engine data from the takeoff. Received this message from operations; 'maintenance says the aircraft will be dead upon arrival...we would like you to return to [departure airport]....change aircraft and proceed [to destination].' [we] requested clearance from ATC for diversion per company request advised the flight attendants then the passengers of our return. Landed and changed aircraft. [It] took an hour and half delay for problems generating the required paper work for our second flight. Event occurred because a previous logbook entry with the same problem was not adequately addressed by maintenance. Aircraft had a history with high egt temperatures on the engine one.
