Narrative:
We arrived early and had to wait at the head of the gate yellow line for a guide man. After a few minutes a guide man showed up and turned on the parking guide lights. I verified that all traffic on the vehicle lanes was stopped and began to move the aircraft. I noticed a baggage tug southbound on the vehicle lane making about a 45 degree left turn and [it] began passing stopped vehicles. I thought he was going to the driveway into the baggage area just north of our gate but he didn't turn and proceeded through the middle of our gate between the nose of my moving aircraft and the jetway. I began to stop the taxi but before I could stop the tug was through the gate area. We parked without further incident. The number on the hood of the tug was noted.
