Narrative:
Aircraft was refused due to both autopilots being inoperable and both flight guidance systems MEL'ed inoperable. I called dispatch and informed him I would not accept the aircraft unless one autopilot or one flight guidance system was placed back into service. Maintenance restored the aircraft to an acceptable level and we departed late. Maintenance or dispatch did not have any idea how these systems were related.
