Narrative:
Our clearance was a left turn to a heading of 360 after departing runway 4; with a first fix of white on the lga 2 departure. After we had been given a turn southbound; the controller told us to go direct col (colts neck) VOR which was not in the original flight plan. The FMS database had 2 different navaids assigned identification col. The incorrect col was selected and the aircraft headed west instead of south. ATC then assigned a heading of 170. After realizing the mistake; the correct col was selected. Neither pilot had never seen 2 separate navaids with the same identification appear in the FMS which led to confusion and selection of the incorrect navaid (col).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CRJ900 Captain reported that when cleared direct COL on the LGA 2 Departure; two COL NAVAIDS appeared on the FMS. ATC issued vectors to Colts Neck (COL) after the aircraft turned to the incorrect COL NAVAID.
