Narrative:
Before I had the chance to contact ATC for a taxi clearance; the captain started a 90 degree turn away from the gate to an active taxiway. At the same time a helicopter was taxiing north to south. We almost pulled directly in the path of the helicopter which was approximately 50-100 ft AGL. An aircraft marshaller however signaled that it was all clear to make the turn out. We immediately stopped and didn't taxi into the path of the helicopter.
