Narrative:
Air carrier X was slightly north of the route of flight that was in national airspace system. I attempted a hand off to ZTL center but the action failed because the aircraft flight plan did not take him through ZTL's airspace. Approximately four seconds later; the host automatically started a hand off to ZHU center. Since I attempted a hand off to ZTL; when the hand off was accepted by ZHU; I naturally thought that ZTL had taken the hand off. The frequency change to ZTL was then completed. If the controller working the monroeville high sector at ZTL would have notified me at the brewton sector and let me know that I had put an aircraft on his/her frequency without a hand off; I would have effected coordination. I intend to be more aware of the coordinated routes and ensure the hand off; or appropriate coordination; takes place.
