Narrative:
Takeoff and initial climb normal. At approximately 1;500 AGL [we experienced] total electrical failure. All screens dark; radios inoperative. Power came back on after about 10 seconds then dropped off again. Power came back on and remained on. We flew a visual pattern and landed [at departure airport]. Power remained on until we arrived at the gate and shut the aircraft down. Tower declared an emergency for [us]. Flight attendants were advised no cabin prep required.
