Narrative:
After passengers were boarded; the gate agent told me that the passengers in xa and xxa appeared intoxicated and were loud and swearing in the gate area. I asked her why they were on board then and notified the flight attendant B and pilots. Flight attendant B said the passenger in xxa smelled of alcohol and gave her a hard time about stowing his luggage and his pants were partially down in the back. As a crew; we decided to have the passenger in xxa removed for his own safety and the captain and first officer told the gate agent to remove him. She proceeded to get her supervisor; and the passenger was removed. The captain also made a PA announcement regarding the flight attendant's role in safety and reminded passengers to follow our instructions. Of course this incident added to our already late departure time due to our previous flight's arrival time and having to change gates clear across the airport.
