Narrative:
Second officer was x-feeding #1 to #2 engine but failed to turn on #1 transfer pump resulting in low fuel pressure and causing #2 engine to compressor stall. Engine was restarted and rest of flight was normal. Second officer used bad judgement in using an alternate fuel balancing procedure. Normal procedure avoids x-feeding and exposing the crew to this mistake. Supplemental information from acn 90223: turned off aft boost pumps on #2 engine, fuel pressure dropped towards zero and I immediately turned on all boost pumps. Engine #2 compressor stalled and was shut down and later restarted. X-feeding is an alternate fuel balancing procedure, normally use transfer pump thru fill valve. I should have stayed with normal procedure!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLAMEOUT ACCOUNT IMPROPER FUEL TRANSFER.
Narrative: S/O WAS X-FEEDING #1 TO #2 ENGINE BUT FAILED TO TURN ON #1 TRANSFER PUMP RESULTING IN LOW FUEL PRESSURE AND CAUSING #2 ENGINE TO COMPRESSOR STALL. ENGINE WAS RESTARTED AND REST OF FLT WAS NORMAL. S/O USED BAD JUDGEMENT IN USING AN ALTERNATE FUEL BALANCING PROCEDURE.
