Narrative:
Lead aircraft I was flying took off from oak to hnl. Approximately 5 hours out lost navigation sat/navigation. While penetrating a line of WX, 2 wing aircraft became separated. This was a flight of 3 aircraft. Wing aircraft navigated by dr, as did lead aircraft. Several hours before arriving hnl HF transmitter became unreadable to control. Used VHF communication relaying through other aircraft to control. Had VHF communication with all aircraft in flight. Received ADF approximately 800 mi from hi. Used combination of dead reckoning sat/navigation and ADF for positioning. I believe I may be accused of violating far part 91.191. I do not believe I was in violation because I fulfilled all requirements as outlined for formation flight. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: all aircraft were in communication via VHF at all times. Position reports relayed by acrs along route. One pilot elected to fly to hilo when he received ADF, orient himself and then continue to oahu. All 3 pilots feel they complied with far's. ATC hnl seemed more concerned than pilots. Offered all kinds of assistance which was not needed. Reporter has flown this area many times, was on target with navigation even though circumnaving WX. Reports sent because FAA personnel with whom they spoke in hnl said he didn't know if anything was wrong, but would research it to find out. If there was a problem he would have to violate the pilots.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NO SPECIFIC ANOMOLY OCCURRED.
Narrative: LEAD ACFT I WAS FLYING TOOK OFF FROM OAK TO HNL. APPROX 5 HRS OUT LOST NAV SAT/NAV. WHILE PENETRATING A LINE OF WX, 2 WING ACFT BECAME SEPARATED. THIS WAS A FLT OF 3 ACFT. WING ACFT NAVIGATED BY DR, AS DID LEAD ACFT. SEVERAL HRS BEFORE ARRIVING HNL HF XMITTER BECAME UNREADABLE TO CTL. USED VHF COM RELAYING THROUGH OTHER ACFT TO CTL. HAD VHF COM WITH ALL ACFT IN FLT. RECEIVED ADF APPROX 800 MI FROM HI. USED COMBINATION OF DEAD RECKONING SAT/NAV AND ADF FOR POSITIONING. I BELIEVE I MAY BE ACCUSED OF VIOLATING FAR PART 91.191. I DO NOT BELIEVE I WAS IN VIOLATION BECAUSE I FULFILLED ALL REQUIREMENTS AS OUTLINED FOR FORMATION FLT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: ALL ACFT WERE IN COM VIA VHF AT ALL TIMES. POS RPTS RELAYED BY ACRS ALONG ROUTE. ONE PLT ELECTED TO FLY TO HILO WHEN HE RECEIVED ADF, ORIENT HIMSELF AND THEN CONTINUE TO OAHU. ALL 3 PLTS FEEL THEY COMPLIED WITH FAR'S. ATC HNL SEEMED MORE CONCERNED THAN PLTS. OFFERED ALL KINDS OF ASSISTANCE WHICH WAS NOT NEEDED. RPTR HAS FLOWN THIS AREA MANY TIMES, WAS ON TARGET WITH NAV EVEN THOUGH CIRCUMNAVING WX. RPTS SENT BECAUSE FAA PERSONNEL WITH WHOM THEY SPOKE IN HNL SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW IF ANYTHING WAS WRONG, BUT WOULD RESEARCH IT TO FIND OUT. IF THERE WAS A PROB HE WOULD HAVE TO VIOLATE THE PLTS.
