Narrative:
A line of thunderstorms required a left 10 mile deviation. Four other aircraft ahead of us did the same. I sent message for deviation to shanwick via cpdlc. After a while with no response I deviated 10 miles left of course. We then got a message from shanwick denying our request. Operational safety required deviation and shanwick offered no other option. We cleared the weather and returned to track.
