Narrative:
Our flight xyz was on the acton arrival into dfw at 11000' and 250 KTS. Between flato and creek intxns, we were handed off to an arrival controller who instructed us to turn left, 360 degrees and descend to 6000'. Passing 10000' we observed an medium large transport only momentarily as it approached from our 4 O'clock position, which appeared to be within 1000'. When we queried the controller, he stated that he was at 9000'. When we told him we had clearance to 6000', he said it was for another aircraft. The clearance we received and acknowledged was for xyd. The controllers must slow down and make sure that everyone understands the instructions.
