Narrative:
The push back was normal except when pushing from this gate ground control normally has the aircraft push facing west; but on this particular day ground control had the aircraft face east. The push and engine start was normal. I completed the after start checklist and the captain called for flaps 5 and taxi clearance. I received the clearance to taxi and called clear right. We started aircraft movement and then the captain stopped the aircraft and said that the ground crew was still down below. The captain stated that the ground crew was clear and we proceeded with the flight. Even though the wave off was on the left side of the aircraft both pilots need confirmation that the bypass pin has been removed and the ground crew is clear of the aircraft. It is also a good practice for the first officer to remain vigilant on the intercom frequency until he or she knows personally that the ground crew is clear of the aircraft.
