Narrative:
As we were approaching lga and getting vectors for runway 22. ATC called us and issued a right turn to a 070 or 090 heading and also informed us of traffic at one o'clock that we were to follow for the visual. After we made the turn; we identified traffic at 1 o'clock and proceeded to follw traffic. However; the reference to traffic ATC wanted us to follow was at one o' clock prior to the turn. As a result of the turn; we ended up following traffic and getting an RA with the traffic that we should have followed.ATC advised to immediately climb to 3;500 ft and follow traffic once clear. It was at this point that we executed the maneuver and proceeded to follow intended traffic. Traffic on final approach was not interrupted at any time and we proceeded to land and taxi on to the gate. We did slightly overshoot final as a result of the maneuver but were able to correct quickly.
