Narrative:

Shortly after gear retraction; the master warning illuminated; bringing our attention to the dc emergency bus off annunciator. Secondary indications (such as loss of comm #1 and certain engine instruments) confirmed that the dc emergency bus had indeed lost power. After configuring for the climb; I took the radios and the first officer performed the QRH procedure. This procedure called for checking circuit breakers which did not restore the bus; but we were able to power the bus with the emergency power switch (as directed by the QRH).we contacted dispatch and maintenance control who agreed that an an air return was necessary. We requested a level off from ATC and advised that we would be returning to ZZZ but were not declaring an emergency at that time. After performing all applicable checklists; we advised the crew and passengers of our return. We landed normally and taxied to the gate.
