Narrative:
Took off on cavu day; VFR with flight following (intended) for an 87 NM trip. Tower controller did not speak to me on departure until he passed me off to approach and did not call any potential traffic. Once tower passed me off to approach; the approach controller immediately notified me of another aircraft 12:00; 1 NM away at same altitude. I immediately picked up aircraft visually (identification as an above wing cessna - later found to be a C172) and pulled the nose up harder (overrode autopilot climb) to avoid collision. ATC acted appropriately because he could have given me a squawk to identify me properly and confirm my altitude. He undoubtedly saved my life and that of my daughter and whomever was in the C172! I will be purchasing a collision avoidance system for my aircraft. I am an experienced former military carrier pilot with over three decades of flying experience and mishap/flight violation free record.
