Narrative:
While climbing through 5;000 ft our lead flight attendant called up and stated that smoke was accumulating in the aft portion of the cabin with one lavatory alarm sounding. I heard the word smoke and declared an emergency and was given an immediate clearance for a visual approach. I asked for the fire trucks to follow. I also informed tower that we had no evidence of fire; smoke only in the cabin. Checklists were accomplished with the assistance of the flight attendants. A quick announcement was made by them to passengers; a call was made to company and then we landed without incident. After clearing the runway; we came to a stop and I communicated to the fire chief through headset hookup and informed him we had no evidence of smoke or fire on board. I asked him to make a walk around and his crew completed that whereupon I told him we would taxi to the gate under own power.
