Narrative:

While instructing a student practicing short field landings; the left main landing gear strut assembly failed and resulted in the plane coming to a skidding halt on the runway. A cotter-pin was cited for failing in the left main scissor joint allowing the nut to twist loose. The oleo strut then came out of its usual position allowing the left strut housing to contact runway pavement. Due to the appropriate speed on touchdown; directional control was maintained.
