Narrative:
En route to pit from syr cleared to destination, issued descent clearance to 13000' then 12000 or eleven, I don't remember the altitude exactly but it wasn't a problem. After passing grace intersection by about 9 mi center asked us if we were in the hold. We responded no holding clearance received. Center gave us a 180 to the right vector back toward grace and issued holding instructions. I had heard the center issue holding instructions to a similar flight # but not us, no did we respond to any holding instructions. Another aircraft on the frequency had the same problem, then the center verified everyone's holding instructions on the frequency. It appears that the ATC person was issuing instructions without getting proper acknowledgements, plus confusing flight numbers.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG FAILED TO ENTER AHD AS EXPECTED BY ARTCC. THE CTLR APPARENTLY USED THE WRONG ACFT IDENTIFICATION.
Narrative: ENRTE TO PIT FROM SYR CLRED TO DEST, ISSUED DSCNT CLRNC TO 13000' THEN 12000 OR ELEVEN, I DON'T REMEMBER THE ALT EXACTLY BUT IT WASN'T A PROB. AFTER PASSING GRACE INTXN BY ABOUT 9 MI CTR ASKED US IF WE WERE IN THE HOLD. WE RESPONDED NO HOLDING CLRNC RECEIVED. CTR GAVE US A 180 TO THE RIGHT VECTOR BACK TOWARD GRACE AND ISSUED HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS. I HAD HEARD THE CTR ISSUE HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS TO A SIMILAR FLT # BUT NOT US, NO DID WE RESPOND TO ANY HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS. ANOTHER ACFT ON THE FREQ HAD THE SAME PROB, THEN THE CTR VERIFIED EVERYONE'S HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS ON THE FREQ. IT APPEARS THAT THE ATC PERSON WAS ISSUING INSTRUCTIONS WITHOUT GETTING PROPER ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, PLUS CONFUSING FLT NUMBERS.
