Narrative:
Small aircraft Y at 9000' was handed off to runway 31 45 mi from boundary. I think the data block timed out and small transport X landing lyh was southbound in V469 was descended to 6000'. The C/a went off just after the 2 passed and the altitude showed 9000' on small aircraft Y and 9900' on small transport X. Small transport X was told to maintain 10000'. He said he was out of 9500' climbing. At the time the ntap showed 3 1/2 mi with 300' sep. The person on the sector was OJT. It was getting busy about 5 mins earlier. I asked for a handoff person. I had to get up, slide back, unplug myself and the trnee moved jacks up and plugged in the handoff person. This is apparently when the data block timed out. When the trnee descended small transport I did not see a data block in his way nor did the trnee or the handoff person. This trnee has been having an average of 3 errors a day with a total of 150 hours. Radar OJT with live traffic. So I have been watching her very closely, having to give many fast correct clrncs.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR-SMT DESCENDED THROUGH THE ALT OF OPPOSITE DIRECTION SMA RESULTING IN LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION.
Narrative: SMA Y AT 9000' WAS HANDED OFF TO RWY 31 45 MI FROM BOUNDARY. I THINK THE DATA BLOCK TIMED OUT AND SMT X LNDG LYH WAS SBND IN V469 WAS DSNDED TO 6000'. THE C/A WENT OFF JUST AFTER THE 2 PASSED AND THE ALT SHOWED 9000' ON SMA Y AND 9900' ON SMT X. SMT X WAS TOLD TO MAINTAIN 10000'. HE SAID HE WAS OUT OF 9500' CLBING. AT THE TIME THE NTAP SHOWED 3 1/2 MI WITH 300' SEP. THE PERSON ON THE SECTOR WAS OJT. IT WAS GETTING BUSY ABOUT 5 MINS EARLIER. I ASKED FOR A HDOF PERSON. I HAD TO GET UP, SLIDE BACK, UNPLUG MYSELF AND THE TRNEE MOVED JACKS UP AND PLUGGED IN THE HDOF PERSON. THIS IS APPARENTLY WHEN THE DATA BLOCK TIMED OUT. WHEN THE TRNEE DSNDED SMT I DID NOT SEE A DATA BLOCK IN HIS WAY NOR DID THE TRNEE OR THE HDOF PERSON. THIS TRNEE HAS BEEN HAVING AN AVERAGE OF 3 ERRORS A DAY WITH A TOTAL OF 150 HRS. RADAR OJT WITH LIVE TFC. SO I HAVE BEEN WATCHING HER VERY CLOSELY, HAVING TO GIVE MANY FAST CORRECT CLRNCS.
