Narrative:

After takeoff at ewr, runway 22R, ewr 1 departure, pilots contacted departure at 2000' MSL on climb out and read 'passing 2000' for 5000'.' departure control made no attempt to advise us that the ewr 1 departure runway 22R calls for a 2500' level off, but instead asked for 'identify' and made a remark about our transponder and cleared us to 5000'. After passing 2500', departure called it to our attention that the SID specifies a 2500' level off and not 5000' for runway 22R. Runway 29 calls for a 5000' level off but the way the text in the SID is written it is easily mistaken and happens frequently. Text of SID needs to be spaced so 22L/right procedure is not confused with 29 procedure when runway change is assigned on short notice.

Title: FAILED TO COMPLY WITH ALT RESTRICTION NOTED ON THE SID.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF AT EWR, RWY 22R, EWR 1 DEP, PLTS CONTACTED DEP AT 2000' MSL ON CLBOUT AND READ 'PASSING 2000' FOR 5000'.' DEP CTL MADE NO ATTEMPT TO ADVISE US THAT THE EWR 1 DEP RWY 22R CALLS FOR A 2500' LEVEL OFF, BUT INSTEAD ASKED FOR 'IDENT' AND MADE A REMARK ABOUT OUR TRANSPONDER AND CLRED US TO 5000'. AFTER PASSING 2500', DEP CALLED IT TO OUR ATTN THAT THE SID SPECIFIES A 2500' LEVEL OFF AND NOT 5000' FOR RWY 22R. RWY 29 CALLS FOR A 5000' LEVEL OFF BUT THE WAY THE TEXT IN THE SID IS WRITTEN IT IS EASILY MISTAKEN AND HAPPENS FREQUENTLY. TEXT OF SID NEEDS TO BE SPACED SO 22L/R PROC IS NOT CONFUSED WITH 29 PROC WHEN RWY CHANGE IS ASSIGNED ON SHORT NOTICE.
