Narrative:
[We were] dispatched with engine generator inoperative for an oceanic flight. During the return flight the APU died. We accomplished the QRH: APU failure checklist. The restart attempt was unsuccessful. We then completed the QRH: left/right-APU generator failure checklist and declared an emergency with center. We established a phone patch with the dispatcher and made a joint decision to divert. The event occurred because we were dispatched with a generator inoperative rather than making the repair (as is often the case) and a resulting failure of the APU. It is too easy and expedient (legal) for the company to send us out over the ocean without backup systems.
