Narrative:
Atl dtw, medium large transport, FAA inspector on jump seat. During descent #2 oil temperature gauge started spiking. A closer examination showed gauge was for an medium large transport a aircraft, yellow arc and red radial line in the wrong place. FAA inspector insisted grounding aircraft in dtw until repairs made. FAA inspector's headset jack was broke, was having to use copilot speaker for phone patch to mia tech services. Autoplt was broken on ci, I was handflying, talking to approach, navigating. FAA inspector had list of items for copilot to relay to miami-tech. I did not have time to consult proper charts. I had to take a shortcut so looked up next NAVAID, inbound leg, dialed it in, flew it. Approach yelled at us. Told us we were off the arwy, turn left, get back on. The controller's voice sounded like we may have caused a problem/conflict. FAA man was on first officer's speaker, unaware of any off arwy problem. Later review of arwy revealed a significant dog leg on arwy. The FAA man, his broken autoplt, too much confusion, too much going on during approach, all contributed.

Title: DISTRACTED BY ACI AND FAILED TO FOLLOW VICTOR AIRWAY WHEN DOGLEG DEPICTED ON CHART.
Narrative: ATL DTW, MLG, FAA INSPECTOR ON JUMP SEAT. DURING DSCNT #2 OIL TEMP GAUGE STARTED SPIKING. A CLOSER EXAMINATION SHOWED GAUGE WAS FOR AN MLG A ACFT, YELLOW ARC AND RED RADIAL LINE IN THE WRONG PLACE. FAA INSPECTOR INSISTED GNDING ACFT IN DTW UNTIL REPAIRS MADE. FAA INSPECTOR'S HEADSET JACK WAS BROKE, WAS HAVING TO USE COPLT SPEAKER FOR PHONE PATCH TO MIA TECH SVCS. AUTOPLT WAS BROKEN ON CI, I WAS HANDFLYING, TALKING TO APCH, NAVIGATING. FAA INSPECTOR HAD LIST OF ITEMS FOR COPLT TO RELAY TO MIAMI-TECH. I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO CONSULT PROPER CHARTS. I HAD TO TAKE A SHORTCUT SO LOOKED UP NEXT NAVAID, INBND LEG, DIALED IT IN, FLEW IT. APCH YELLED AT US. TOLD US WE WERE OFF THE ARWY, TURN LEFT, GET BACK ON. THE CTLR'S VOICE SOUNDED LIKE WE MAY HAVE CAUSED A PROB/CONFLICT. FAA MAN WAS ON F/O'S SPEAKER, UNAWARE OF ANY OFF ARWY PROB. LATER REVIEW OF ARWY REVEALED A SIGNIFICANT DOG LEG ON ARWY. THE FAA MAN, HIS BROKEN AUTOPLT, TOO MUCH CONFUSION, TOO MUCH GOING ON DURING APCH, ALL CONTRIBUTED.
