Narrative:
After multiple mechanical issues a tug pulled us out near C1/D1 intersection. We were given clearance to taxi to runway 16R via delta and alpha. Charlie taxiway; which closely parallels taxiway delta; was closed with barriers and cones. We felt the closure was poorly lit. We wanted to make sure we kept our distance from the hazards. Between taxiway C1 and D1 is a small poorly illuminated grassy (I believe) area. The runway 11/29 hold short lines seem to be placed well into taxiway delta from the D1 turn. As we started to taxi in the dark rain; we intended to stay well away from the hazards; and I believe we partially crossed the runway 11/29 hold short line. As this was happening; a sharp ground controller issued a clearance to taxi via runway 11 and alpha if we wanted. I believe taxiway delta from hangar 2 is a poor taxi plan and taxiing on runway 11/29 is a much safer choice. From hangar 2 and D1 taxiway; the delta taxiway turn is poorly lit; especially with all the C taxiway barriers and cones. The D taxiway turn came faster than expected; as I was concerned about our distance from the obstructions. Taxiing via runway 11/29 is a much safer choice.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A large aircraft beginning its taxi at the intersection of PAE's Taxiways C1 and D1 missed the turn onto Taxiway D because of poor lighting and the close proximity of the Runway 11/29 hold short line. Tower cleared the flight onto Runway 11/29 to intercept Taxiway A to Runway 16R.
