Narrative:
Sdf departure gave new vectors for traffic and a climb for 12000'. After reading back that clearance ATC now gave a frequency change for ZID. I changed and called in (light transport X climbing to 12000'). ZID acknowledged. I now replied our previously assigned heading, center acknowledged. Approximately 1 min later a different controller came on and queried us as to our assigned altitude. I replied 12000'. He immediately said maintain 10000'. We were just passing 10200' and now began a descent for 10000'. Center now said an altitude violation was being investigated, and to call them when we landed in cle. After calling them they apologized and said it was an ATC problem.

Title: ACR LTT GIVEN INCORRECT ALT DURING CLIMB. CTLR CORRECTED AFTER CORRECT ALT WAS EXCEEDED.
Narrative: SDF DEP GAVE NEW VECTORS FOR TFC AND A CLB FOR 12000'. AFTER READING BACK THAT CLRNC ATC NOW GAVE A FREQ CHANGE FOR ZID. I CHANGED AND CALLED IN (LTT X CLBING TO 12000'). ZID ACKNOWLEDGED. I NOW REPLIED OUR PREVIOUSLY ASSIGNED HDG, CENTER ACKNOWLEDGED. APPROX 1 MIN LATER A DIFFERENT CTLR CAME ON AND QUERIED US AS TO OUR ASSIGNED ALT. I REPLIED 12000'. HE IMMEDIATELY SAID MAINTAIN 10000'. WE WERE JUST PASSING 10200' AND NOW BEGAN A DSCNT FOR 10000'. CENTER NOW SAID AN ALT VIOLATION WAS BEING INVESTIGATED, AND TO CALL THEM WHEN WE LANDED IN CLE. AFTER CALLING THEM THEY APOLOGIZED AND SAID IT WAS AN ATC PROB.
