Narrative:
My student and I were approaching the airport for landing; and were writing down the ATIS information. We briefly had our heads down during copying the ATIS. When we looked up we saw a C172 or C182 coming at us about 100 ft above our altitude; and at our 2 o'clock position. We pushed the nose down but did not turn. They didn't appear to see us or take any evasive action. The sun was behind them and off to the side a bit; which didn't help the visibility. We need to keep a better watch; and maybe not both copy ATIS at once. One of us could keep our head up while the other is writing. Also avoid flying into the sun.
