Narrative:
I was training a cpc-it on local control. She had traffic in position and needed aircraft X to exit runway to get out the IFR dept. She told him to exit runway to right and hold short. We have continuous exiting at smo except that recently they painted some green areas around some signage at the runway ends. The aircraft drove over the green area. The green color they used is very dull. Perhaps the city should have briefed the flight schools better and used a brighter green. It's even hard for us to see the departure end green areas.
