Narrative:
While on downwind; pbi approach called out VFR traffic 500 ft below at 1 to 2 o'clock. VFR aircraft continued to close upon us and we received a traffic advisory. We still had 500 ft vertical clearance at this time. The VFR aircraft started to climb and we received a RA demanding a climb we started a climb of about 1;100 ft/min as instructed by TCAS. We had lost sight of the traffic under us. We reported the climb and RA to ATC. They authorized a climb and gave us a vector to the south. We received a 'clear of conflict' and continued the approach normally. VFR aircraft failed to see and avoid. The VFR aircraft climbed toward us for no apparent reason. TCAS; ATC and our crew reacted in accordance with established procedures. The procedures and TCAS worked well.
