Narrative:
We landed in atlanta on runway 9R and were advised to hold short of the parallel runway 9L for departing traffic. We read back the hold clearance and although we held short of the runway 9L, we failed to hold short of the 'hold' line. It is my estimate that the hold line is 20' from the runway's edge. The nose of our aircraft came to a stop 5-10' past the hold line, leaving the nose of the aircraft 10-15' from the edge of the runway. Although we did not stop short of the designated hold line, I feel that our aircraft remained a safe distance from the parallel runway. An air carrier large transport was cleared for takeoff prior to our being cleared across 9L. No evasive action had to be taken by either aircraft or the tower controller. In conclusion, I would recommend that all crews be a little more attentive as to the exact location of airport taxi and hold lines. Remember, our attention and respect for 'air' safety also includes all 'ground' operations, and our flight isn't over until the parking brake is set!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACT LTT FAILED TO HOLD AT TXWY HOLD LINE BUT ACR LGT ON TKOF ROLL CONTINUED TKOF WITHOUT INCIDENT.
Narrative: WE LANDED IN ATLANTA ON RWY 9R AND WERE ADVISED TO HOLD SHORT OF THE PARALLEL RWY 9L FOR DEPARTING TFC. WE READ BACK THE HOLD CLRNC AND ALTHOUGH WE HELD SHORT OF THE RWY 9L, WE FAILED TO HOLD SHORT OF THE 'HOLD' LINE. IT IS MY ESTIMATE THAT THE HOLD LINE IS 20' FROM THE RWY'S EDGE. THE NOSE OF OUR ACFT CAME TO A STOP 5-10' PAST THE HOLD LINE, LEAVING THE NOSE OF THE ACFT 10-15' FROM THE EDGE OF THE RWY. ALTHOUGH WE DID NOT STOP SHORT OF THE DESIGNATED HOLD LINE, I FEEL THAT OUR ACFT REMAINED A SAFE DISTANCE FROM THE PARALLEL RWY. AN ACR LGT WAS CLRED FOR TKOF PRIOR TO OUR BEING CLRED ACROSS 9L. NO EVASIVE ACTION HAD TO BE TAKEN BY EITHER ACFT OR THE TWR CTLR. IN CONCLUSION, I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT ALL CREWS BE A LITTLE MORE ATTENTIVE AS TO THE EXACT LOCATION OF ARPT TAXI AND HOLD LINES. REMEMBER, OUR ATTN AND RESPECT FOR 'AIR' SAFETY ALSO INCLUDES ALL 'GND' OPS, AND OUR FLT ISN'T OVER UNTIL THE PARKING BRAKE IS SET!
