Narrative:
Level 10000', established atlis arrival, 323 degree radial st louis VOR, 31 DME, slowing to 250 KT. First officer shouted traffic at 9:30, same altitude, approximately 1000' away. When I looked, traffic was at 8:30, and seemed sure to hit our tail. I turned right and descended losing 500'. Controller did not point out traffic. About one minute later, I asked controller about traffic. He said 'I have traffic 4 mi behind you southwest bound.' about 15 seconds later he said 'now I have VFR beacon (1200) still southwest bound.' aircraft was red small aircraft.
