Narrative:
Climbing through approx FL240 'automatic trim fail' light illuminated on main instrument panel. Crew performed QRH procedure and returned to the departure airport for landing. Emergency was declared ATC and airport rescue and fire fighters was notified. Uneventful landing and taxi to gate. Aircraft was taken out of service.

Title: A B737-800 AUTO TRIM FAIL alerted during climb after takeoff so an emergency was declared and the aircraft returned to the departure airport.
Narrative: Climbing through approx FL240 'AUTO TRIM FAIL' light illuminated on main instrument panel. Crew performed QRH procedure and returned to the departure airport for landing. Emergency was declared ATC and Airport Rescue and Fire Fighters was notified. Uneventful landing and taxi to gate. Aircraft was taken out of service.
