Narrative:
We were cleared for a visual approach to runway 21L at dtw. Our traffic was large transport Y making a visual approach ahead of us to runway 21 center. Our speed was greater than his and consequently we overtook and passed this aircraft at approximately 800' AGL. I was not overly concerned until we actually started to pas and then it was too late to slow further and maintain a distance behind the aircraft. My decision to continue the approach was based on both aircraft being firmly committed to their respective runways. This could have been prevented by my having recognized the significant difference in speed, or having been told by the tower that our speed was much greater than large transport Y.

Title: ACR TURBOPROP, ON VISUAL APCH TO RWY 21L, PASSED ACR LGT ON VISUAL APCH TO RWY 21C, AFTER BEING INSTRUCTED TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 21L AT DTW. OUR TFC WAS LGT Y MAKING A VISUAL APCH AHEAD OF US TO RWY 21 CENTER. OUR SPD WAS GREATER THAN HIS AND CONSEQUENTLY WE OVERTOOK AND PASSED THIS ACFT AT APPROX 800' AGL. I WAS NOT OVERLY CONCERNED UNTIL WE ACTUALLY STARTED TO PAS AND THEN IT WAS TOO LATE TO SLOW FURTHER AND MAINTAIN A DISTANCE BEHIND THE ACFT. MY DECISION TO CONTINUE THE APCH WAS BASED ON BOTH ACFT BEING FIRMLY COMMITTED TO THEIR RESPECTIVE RWYS. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY MY HAVING RECOGNIZED THE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN SPD, OR HAVING BEEN TOLD BY THE TWR THAT OUR SPD WAS MUCH GREATER THAN LGT Y.
