Narrative:
At FL380 we got a master warning with triple chime with diff press annunciated. The first officer and I both noticed the differential pressure was 8.9 and flashing red. Both oxygen masks were put on and a descent was initiated with a emergency declared to ATC. During the descent the pressure controller was changed to the cpam 2 by the auto function and the message cleared. By the time I opened my manual the message was cleared and no more abnormalities present. We called the dispatcher and advised him of the situation and elected to stay at 24;000 ft because we were no longer in an emergency state. I called center and canceled the emergency and continued to destination without any further problems. The cpam 1 failed to correct for the proper pressure of the aircraft; exceeding the normal value.
